Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano have arrested a suspected drug trafficker, Ashiru Bala, after recovering 1,499 bottles of cough syrup containing codeine.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari. According to the statement, the Kano State Commandant of the NDLEA, D. Y. Lawal, said the operation was carried out following intelligence gathering that led to the discovery of the illicit consignment.

Lawal explained that the 45-year-old suspect was apprehended at his residence in Lambu, located in Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Investigations revealed that Bala had transported the drugs from Abuja and intended to deliver them to a local dealer in Kano for illegal distribution.

According to the NDLEA, the consignment was part of supplies allegedly meant for illicit consumption ahead of the Sallah celebrations.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed that he had been transporting illegal substances for about two years. He also disclosed that he previously worked in township services in Abuja for four years and received substantial payments for each delivery.

Lawal said the arrest underscores the agency’s determination to dismantle drug networks and safeguard communities from the dangers of illicit drugs.

“This arrest demonstrates our commitment to protecting communities from the harms of illicit substances. We will continue to sustain pressure on drug networks and ensure offenders are brought to justice,” he stated.
