The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has insisted that there are no bandits operating within the nation’s capital, Abuja, despite growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the territory. Wike made the assertion during a security-focused town hall meeting with residents and stakeholders in the Bwari Area Council of the FCT, convened to address rising cases of kidnapping and other criminal activities.

Speaking at the engagement, the minister maintained that while crime is a global issue, the situation in Abuja should not be mischaracterized as banditry.

“There is no place in the world, including developed countries, where crime does not exist. I do not believe in the notion of banditry; there are no bandits in Abuja,” he said.

The town hall brought together community leaders, security agencies, and residents, many of whom expressed concerns over recent security incidents in the area. In response, Wike reassured residents of the administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the Federal Capital Territory. He emphasized that law enforcement agencies were actively working to curb criminal activities and ensure the safety of lives and property.

The minister’s comments, however, are expected to spark debate, particularly among residents and analysts who argue that the increasing rate of kidnappings in satellite towns around Abuja reflects a more serious security challenge.

Wike reiterated that the FCT Administration would continue collaborating with security agencies and local communities to address emerging threats and maintain order in the nation’s capital.
