FIFA Mandates Female Coaching Presence in Women’s Tournaments

World football governing body FIFA has announced a landmark regulation requiring all teams participating in women’s competitions to include at least one female coach on their technical bench.

The decision, approved at a FIFA Council meeting on Thursday, March 19, 2026, stipulates that every team must appoint either a female head coach or at least one female assistant coach. The rule will apply across all FIFA-organised women’s tournaments, including youth and senior competitions.

According to FIFA, the initiative is aimed at increasing female representation in coaching roles within women’s football, where men still dominate technical positions despite the rapid growth of the women’s game globally.

The new regulation is expected to take effect starting with upcoming competitions such as the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and will also be enforced at the senior FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The development is set to have significant implications for several national teams, including Nigeria’s Super Falcons. The nine-time African champions currently have a male-led coaching setup, meaning adjustments may be required to comply with the new directive.

However, the rule does not compel teams to replace existing male head coaches but mandates the inclusion of female representation within the coaching staff.

Football analysts have described the move as a major step toward gender inclusivity in the sport, with expectations that it will open more opportunities for women in technical and leadership roles.

With implementation timelines approaching, football federations around the world are now expected to review and restructure their technical teams to align with FIFA’s latest directive.
