Arsenal FC will face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League Final on May 30, after PSG edged past Bayern Munich with a 6–5 aggregate victory on Wednesday night.
The first leg of the encounter ended in a 5-4 thriller in favour of PSG at the Parc des Princes stadium in France. In the second leg at the Allianz Arena in Germany, PSG capitalised on an early lead thank to a strike from PSG forward Ousmane Dembele in the 3rd minute, providing a two-goal advantage to the French side. Eventually, Bayern Munich were able to pull a leveller in the 93rd minute from their forward Harry Kane. However, the strike was not enough to close the one-goal deficit, halting their progress to the final stage.
Arsenal were the first to clinch the final spot after a narrow 1-0 lead at home over Atletico Madrid to make it a 2-1 aggregate on Tuesday night before PSG also clinched the second spot.
Interestingly, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have a history of previous encounters in this competition. At the group stage encounters in 2016, none could defeat the other as both legs ended in draws: 1-1 in France and 2-2 in England.
However, in the round two of the 2025 campaign, Arsenal secured their first win over psg with a convincing 2-0 victory, courtesy of a header from Kai Havertz and an uninterrupted free kick from Bukayo Saka. PSG decided to turn the tide in the semi-final stage of the campaign as they defeated Arsenal both home and away with a 3-1 aggregate victory.
In terms of tactics and formations, Paris Saint-Germain possess the more potent attack, having scored 44 goals across all matches while conceding 22. Their forward line, led by Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Désiré Doué, has consistently delivered with aggressive and productive attacking play for the French side.
In contrast, Arsenal F.C. take pride in a resolute defence marshalled by Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba, which has conceded just six goals in the competition and recorded nine clean sheets across 14 matches.
The 2026 campaign has brought them together again in the final stage of the competition to be played at the Puskás Arena in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. PSG are the first team to reach back-to-back UCL Finals after Real Madrid did it through the 2016-2018 seasons. Arsenal, on the other hand, will witness another final performance in 20 years after they emerged runners up in 2006, suffering a 2-1 defeat from Barcelona.
The 2026 Champions League final is scheduled for Saturday 30 May 2026, marking the conclusion of the 71st season of Europe’s elite club competition and the 34th since it was renamed the UEFA Champions League, according to uefa.com
The 67,000-capacity Puskás Aréna is named after legendary Hungarian striker Ferenc Puskás, who won the European Cup three times with Real Madrid.
In May 2023, Sevilla FC secured a record seventh UEFA Europa League title at the stadium, defeating AS Roma on penalties. However, the 2026 UEFA Champions League Final will mark the first time Hungary hosts the final of Europe’s premier club competition.
