The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has directed that an apology be extended to Professor Eyo Ekpe and members of the Nigerian Medical Association following the May 12, 2026 incident involving operatives of the commission and staff of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
The directive followed the consideration of a preliminary report on the incident, which reportedly caused tension between personnel of the anti graft agency and medical workers at the hospital.
In a statement issued after reviewing the report, Olukoyede expressed regret over the discomfort and public concern generated by the episode.
“The wellbeing of Nigerians remains at the core of the Commission’s mandate. We regret the discomfort this unfortunate incident caused members of staff of the hospital and the general public,” he said.
The EFCC chairman also reaffirmed the commission’s earlier decision to conduct a full investigation into the matter.
“Any officer found to have acted outside the acceptable code of professional conduct will be subjected to the internal disciplinary process once the investigation is concluded,” Olukoyede stated.
He added that the commission would continue to engage relevant stakeholders in order to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents in the future. Olukoyede, however, maintained that the incident would not weaken the resolve of the EFCC in carrying out its anti corruption responsibilities across the country.
“This unfortunate development will not distract the Commission from pursuing its mandate in any part of Nigeria,” he said.
The EFCC chairman further appealed to members of the NMA and other professional groups to continue supporting the agency in the fight against economic and financial crimes.
“We urge professional bodies and patriotic Nigerians to continue supporting the EFCC in the collective effort to rid the nation of corruption and financial crimes,” he added.
