The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police, Tactical Commanders, and Heads of Police Formations across the country to heighten enforcement against vehicles operating without registration number plates or with concealed, altered, defaced, or obscured registration details.
The directive was issued during the monthly conference of strategic senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, June 10, by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the IGP described the increasing number of vehicles operating without proper registration as a threat to security.
He stressed that vehicle registration remains a critical tool for crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and effective law enforcement.
“The growing trend of vehicles operating without proper registration or with deliberately concealed number plates is unlawful and a serious threat to public safety and national security,” the IGP stated.
He added that criminal elements often exploit anonymous vehicles to commit offences and evade detection by security agencies.
Consequently, the police chief directed all commands nationwide to immediately commence enforcement operations against offending vehicles.
“Any vehicle found without approved registration plates or with tampered registration details will be stopped, impounded, and subjected to the appropriate legal processes in accordance with extant laws,” the statement read.
The IGP urged vehicle owners to comply with registration requirements and warned that there would be no preferential treatment in the enforcement of the directive.
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening public safety, supporting national security objectives, and enforcing lawful measures aimed at preventing crime and protecting citizens.
AfrikTimes earlier reported that the Oyo State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles and motorcycles with unmarked, fake, obscured, or improperly covered number plates. According to the report, the operation is part of measures being implemented to combat violent crime and other criminal activities across the state.
The Command disclosed that there would be increased police visibility and strategic deployment of personnel in key urban and rural locations to enhance security.
