Kwara Lawyers Declare Strike Over Unpaid Allowances, Salary Disparities

Government lawyers in Kwara State have embarked on an indefinite strike, protesting unpaid statutory allowances and a long-delayed plan to align their pay with that of state judiciary magistrates.

The Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kwara State Chapter, announced the action in a notice issued in Ilorin on Monday. Acting Chairman Kehinde Ayorinde directed all members to withdraw services immediately, effective July 27, 2026, until the state government meets their demands.

The walkout follows the lapse of a seven-day ultimatum the association had given Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq over unresolved welfare issues. Among the grievances: an unpaid balance on a 2020 furniture allowance, outstanding robe allowances covering 2024 through 2026, and a stalled harmonisation of salaries and conditions of service between state counsel and magistrates.

LOAN said the government had repeatedly promised action after a three-day warning strike in October 2025, but those assurances went unfulfilled despite continued appeals to the governor’s office and the Head of Service.

The association argues its members are central to the justice system’s functioning where they are prosecuting criminal matters, advising government agencies, drafting legislation, and pursuing tax defaulters on the state’s behalf. The association warns that the shutdown will persist until their demands are addressed.
