The African Democratic Congress on Thursday welcomed a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that struck down key aspects of INEC’s election guidelines, saying the judgment vindicates its earlier objections to the commission’s strict timelines for party primaries and membership registration.
In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the ruling removes barriers for politicians seeking alternative platforms and predicted a “mass exodus” from the ruling APC in the coming days.
The ADC also recalled its specific objections to the strict timelines on membership registration, as well as the conduct of party primaries
“The decision of the court on these issues, including those that directly contradict the constitution, is therefore a welcome vindication of our position,
The party also said the the ruling, which removes the impediment placed by the guidelines on politicians who wish to seek alternative platforms to contest elections, was a positive development that promotes freedom of association.” the party stated.
The party expressed that the restriction was designed to prevent people from leaving the ruling party, APC. The court has ruled against it, the party believed that it will witness mass exodus from the ruling party.
