The Federal Government says it remains committed to strengthening democratic governance and promoting national unity as Nigerians mark the 27th Democracy Day on June 12, 2026.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this on Friday, June 5, 2026, after joining millions of Nigerians in prayers during a solemn Juma’at service to commemorate the day. He said Nigeria’s progress requires “not only good governance but also the prayers, support and active participation of all citizens.”
“As we commemorate Democracy Day, we reflect on the sacrifices of our heroes, especially Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose courage, resilience and commitment to the will of the people remain enduring symbols of Nigeria’s democratic journey” he stated.
He also added that Democracy Day is an avenue to strengthen our democratic institutions and the collective commitment of Nigerians according to constitutional rule.
“Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance testify to the resilience of our democracy and the determination of our people to uphold democratic values” he expressed.
The minister strongly advise the citizens to strengthen their unity and everyone should work together for the country’s progress
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship. Nigeria’s strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our ability to work together in the interest of our nation,” the minister further stated.
The minister admonished that we can build a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria for present and future generations.
He concluded that “May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, guide our leaders, protect our security personnel, and grant out nation enduring peace, unity and prosperity”
