The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul-Mawlid, commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this in a statement issued Friday and signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani. Tunji-Ojo extended greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the occasion.
He urged Nigerians, irrespective of faith, to reflect on the values of compassion, humility and service associated with the Prophet’s life, describing them as qualities the country needs at this time. He also called on citizens to use the period to pray for the nation’s peace and unity, and urged those observing the holiday to do so with restraint and mutual respect. The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property during the celebrations.
Offices, schools, and public institutions across Nigeria will be closed on Tuesday for the observance.
