The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has handed former governorship aspirant Omar Bolaji Gambari the job of steering its 2027 campaign machinery, appointing him Director-General of the party’s campaign organisation ahead of next year’s governorship race.
The decision was reached unanimously at an expanded meeting of party leaders and governorship candidate Bolakale Kawu, presided over by state chairman Isa Adamu, according to a statement issued in Ilorin on Wednesday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara.
The PDP said Gambari’s selection was driven by his professional background, organisational skills, familiarity with Kwara’s political landscape and his ongoing engagement with young people across the state. The party pointed to his experience spanning international law, finance, entrepreneurship, real estate, agriculture and community development as assets it believes will help him coordinate a campaign team drawing on people from a wide range of backgrounds and generations.
From Rival Aspirant to Campaign Chief
Gambari was one of several contenders who sought the PDP’s 2027 governorship ticket before the party settled on a consensus arrangement that ultimately produced Kawu as its flagbearer. As part of that process, Gambari and other aspirants agreed to step aside and back whoever emerged from the consultations, formally withdrawing from the race in Kawu’s favour.
Rather than exit the party’s political activities altogether, Gambari stayed engaged in the months that followed, involvement the PDP says weighed heavily in the decision to hand him the campaign’s top coordinating role. The party said his mix of private-sector experience, international legal practice, entrepreneurial background and community ties, combined with his read on Kwara’s political terrain, made him a natural fit to lead the effort.
According to the statement, the new campaign structure under Gambari is expected to coordinate party activities across Kwara’s various levels and constituencies as the PDP builds toward the 2027 governorship contest, marking what the party described as another step in its preparations for the race.
