A 43-year-old man has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command over the killing of his neighbour, a university graduate whose interaction with the suspect’s young daughter reportedly triggered the fatal attack.
Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said in a statement on Friday that the suspect, Edebiri Temitope, had been taken into custody and moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation. Temitope had previously been reported to have fled with his family in the aftermath of the killing.
According to the police account, the incident began when the victim, identified as Oje Michael Eje, was seen hugging and playing with Temitope’s three-year-old child. Temitope allegedly took offence at what he considered inappropriate contact, describing the interaction as “rough play” before confronting his neighbour.
Babaseyi said the confrontation turned violent almost immediately. He stated that Temitope grabbed a bamboo stick and struck Eje repeatedly until the 38-year-old collapsed and died from his injuries.
Eje held a degree in Guidance and Counselling, according to the police statement. However, the account released so far does not make it clear whether he had any prior relationship with the child or the family beyond being a neighbour.
The case has been transferred for further investigation at the State CID, and no charges have yet been formally announced.
