The Senate on Wednesday considered two bills sponsored by Barau I Jibrin for amendments to the Nigerian Investment Promotion Council Act and the establishment of a Microbiology Council of Nigeria.

During the plenary session on Wednesday, Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate president proposed the amendment of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Council. The second bill was a bill for an Act to establish the Microbiology Council of Nigeria to provide for the regulation of its membership and foster the practice of microbiology in Nigeria.

While emphasizing on the establishment of the Microbiology Council of Nigeria, he stated that “the profession is important in addressing the health challenges including infectious diseases and bio security concerns”

He explained the yawning gap regarding the non-establishment for microbiologist.

“This regulating gap has limited the capacity of the profession to effectively coordinate standards, enforce ethical conducts, promote research excellence as regards public interest.”

Senator Jibrin highlighted the importance of establishing the council as it is for the public interest and the absence of the regulatory body has hindered the growth of the profession.

“Notable features of the proposed council will be substantially self-sustaining. It is designed to finance insubordination through professional fees, annual subscriptions, conferences, workshops, publications and other legitimate sources of revenues thereby minimizing the dependence of Government funding or no government at all. It shall remain effective and satisfy the needs of our nation.” He noted.

Through his Facebook account, the Senator stated that the first bill scaled through the first reading while the second bill scaled through the second reading.
