President Bola Tinubu has formally invited the Governors of Bauchi and Adamawa States, Bala Mohammed and Ahmadu Fintiri, to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The two governors, who are prominent members of the opposition PDP, received the invitation on Saturday, January 31, 2026, during a political reception in Jalingo, Taraba State.
The event marked the official defection of Taraba State Governor, Kefas Agbu, from the PDP to the APC.
Governor Mohammed currently serves as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, making the invitation particularly significant in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Speaking at the reception through Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented him, President Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the growing wave of defections to the APC, especially in the North-East region.
“I am pleased with the defection of a governor in the North-East geopolitical zone, and I strongly encourage both Adamawa and Bauchi to join the party at the centre,” the President stated.
Governor Agbu’s defection further weakens the PDP, which has experienced a steady decline in the number of governors under its platform. From controlling 13 states in 2023, the party now has only four governors remaining, as several have crossed over to the APC in recent months.
Apart from the APC and PDP, three other political parties currently control one state each: the Labour Party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and the Accord Party.
The latest development signals increasing political realignment ahead of future electoral contests, with the APC continuing to consolidate its dominance at both federal and state levels.
