Abuja, Nigeria
The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and erstwhile Senate President David Mark, has called for unity within the party and a renewed commitment to national leadership, as he criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over worsening insecurity in the country.
Speaking on Wednesday at the ADC’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, Mark said Nigeria was at a critical point, with citizens demanding purposeful leadership, justice, and equity. He described the responsibility before the party as “moral and historic,” urging members to put aside personal interests and work collectively to strengthen the party as a credible alternative to the current administration.
Mark expressed appreciation to party leaders and stakeholders for their commitment and sacrifices, noting that their resilience continued to inspire confidence in the ADC’s future. The former Senate President emphasized the need for internal cohesion, discipline, and respect for party structures, stressing that unity within the party was “non-negotiable.”
“Our task is clear; to reposition the ADC as the foremost platform for national renewal,” he said, adding that the party must expand its grassroots presence and engage more effectively with Nigerians across regions, religions, and generations.
On the state of the nation, Mark painted a picture of rising insecurity, including kidnapping and widespread violence, describing them as having become “the new normal.” He accused the APC-led government of incompetence, saying it had failed to address the country’s security challenges.
“The ruling APC has shown that it is incapable of arresting the situation,” he said, while positioning the ADC as ready to offer a different approach to governance and national security. Mark however urged party members to approach deliberations at the NEC meeting with patriotism and a shared vision for a better Nigeria, emphasizing the need for collaboration with like-minded individuals and groups.
He expressed optimism that, despite the challenges ahead, the party would achieve its goals through unity, discipline, and commitment. The ADC leader concluded by wishing members fruitful deliberations and reaffirming the party’s commitment to building a safer and better Nigeria.
