The Nigeria Revenue Service and the Joint Revenue Board have announced the implementation of a new Taxpayer Identification system aimed at creating a single unified tax identity for all taxable persons across the country.
The announcement was made in a public notice issued in Abuja on May 18, 2026, as part of ongoing reforms under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025.
According to the notice, the new Tax ID policy is backed by Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Act, which mandate every taxable individual and entity in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID.

The agencies said the initiative is designed to strengthen tax administration, improve transparency and enhance service delivery across the nation’s tax system.
“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the statement said.
The notice added that the new system would help consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication and ensure more efficient management of tax related information.
Officials listed several benefits attached to the new framework, including simplified tax compliance, improved visibility of taxpayer records and stronger accountability in revenue collection.
The statement also noted that the initiative would improve coordination of taxpayer information across all levels of government through what it described as data harmonization.
In a major transition move, the NRS and JRB disclosed that the new Tax ID system would replace the existing TIN Validation API currently being used by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, financial institutions and other organizations.
“All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, financial institutions, and other organizations currently utilizing the TIN Validation API are hereby notified that the new Tax ID system will replace the existing TIN Validation API,” the notice read.
The agencies further directed organizations seeking integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises and business names to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB, while corporate entities were advised to work with the Tax Automation Department of the NRS for access to the new Tax ID API and integration guidelines.
The notice was jointly signed by the management of the Nigeria Revenue Service and the Joint Revenue Board.
