Catholic Schools in Ibadan Archdiocese Shut Down Over Security Concerns

‎Catholic schools under the Archdiocese of Ibadan have been directed to suspend academic activities indefinitely following growing concerns over security and reported cases of kidnapping across Oyo State.

‎The directive, issued by the Archbishop, Gabriel Abegunrin through the Archdiocesan Education Committee, was communicated on Thursday in a notice addressed to deans, priests involved in the school apostolate, and heads of Catholic schools.

‎According to the notice, all Catholic schools are to cease operations with immediate effect as a precautionary measure in response to the prevailing security situation.‎

‎”In the wake of the recent reports on security and cases of kidnapping across the state, the Archbishop has directed that all Catholic Schools suspend operation with immediate effect.” The statement read

‎School administrators overseeing boarding facilities were instructed to ensure that parents arrive to pick up their children from 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

‎The Archdiocese said the closure affects all Catholic educational institutions under its jurisdiction and noted that a date for resumption would be announced later by the Education Directorate.

‎The notice was signed by Rev. Fr. Julius A. Akinyode, Secretary of the Archdiocesan Education Committee.

‎The development comes amid heightened anxiety over insecurity in parts of Oyo State, with concerns over the safety of pupils, students, and school personnel prompting calls for stronger protective measures around educational institutions.
