By The Nigerian Army has carried out a sweeping reshuffle of its senior officer corps, moving multiple generals and brigadier generals into new command, operational and staff roles across the Service.
Why the Reshuffle Happened
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, approved the new postings, which the Army says are meant to sharpen operational effectiveness, reinforce leadership and better align the command structure with the country’s shifting security landscape. Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, announced the changes in a post on the Army’s official X account on Wednesday, saying the exercise placed particular emphasis on critical operational theatres and strategic postings to ensure the right mix of leadership, experience and expertise is in place to deliver results.
Key Command Change
The most significant move sends Major General IA Ajose from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations to take over as Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East under Operation HADIN KAI. His predecessor in that theatre, Major General AE Abubakar, has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre as Dean of the Faculty of Operational Research.
Other Major General Postings
Several other senior officers have also been reassigned. Major General AM Alechenu moves from Defence Headquarters Garrison to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, while Major General RT Utsaha shifts from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to take command of Defence Headquarters Garrison. Major General AM Umar heads to the Army War College Nigeria as Commandant, swapping places with Major General UM Alkali, who moves from the college to the Department of Civil-Military Affairs.
Elsewhere, Major General GS Muhammed transfers from the Office of the National Security Adviser to become Director General of the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation, a post vacated by Major General JE Osifo, who takes over as Chairman of the Military Pension Board. Major General IE Ekpenyong moves to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics as Director of Engineering Services.
Brigadier General Reassignments
At the operational level, Brigadier General AA Bello leaves 6 Division Garrison and Sector 3 of the Joint Task Force South-South under Operation DELTA SAFE for a posting at the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations. Brigadier General MS Adamu moves from the Nigerian Army Women Command to lead the newly established 8 Brigade as Commander, while Brigadier General MS Sule shifts from Special Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE to take command of 27 Task Force Brigade.
Brigadier General I Sule moves from the Directorate of Recruitment Management to command 6 Division Garrison. Brigadier General E Azenda transfers from the Land Forces Simulation Centre to command 2 Division Garrison, trading places with Brigadier General AS Bugaje, who moves from 2 Division Garrison to become Director of Administration at the Land Forces Simulation Centre.
The Army’s Message to Its New Commanders
The Army Chief urged the newly posted officers to live up to the trust placed in them through disciplined, innovative and professional leadership, and to stay focused on the Army’s core constitutional duty of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, safeguarding its territorial integrity and supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and security.
The Service described the reshuffle as part of a broader effort to keep its leadership and force-deployment structure adaptable enough to improve operational results and strengthen coordination across joint and inter-agency security operations, adding that the new appointments are expected to sharpen its ability to respond to both existing and emerging security threats nationwide.
