By The Osun State Police Command has arrested Taye Kasali in connection with the killing of his mother, Kudirat Kasali, after she reportedly threatened to lease out the family’s farmland, the household’s main source of income, and allegedly referred to him as mentally unwell.
How the Case Unfolded
According to a statement from the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, the case began on September 1 at around 7:30pm, when a report reached the Bode-Osi Division that both Kudirat Kasali and her son had gone missing. Operatives launched an investigation, and through intelligence led police work, arrested Taye Kasali on September 7 in connection with the case. Under interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the killing.
The Alleged Motive and Confession
Ojelabi said the suspect told investigators that his mother had been calling him mad and had threatened to lease out the family farmland, which he described as the household’s principal means of survival. According to the statement, Kasali confessed to killing his mother on August 31 by slitting her throat with a machete, then burying her body in a shallow grave on the same farmland at the centre of the dispute.
Grave and Weapon Recovered
As the investigation progressed, the suspect reportedly led police operatives to the location of the shallow grave, where his mother’s remains were recovered along with the machete allegedly used in the killing.
Police Response
Ojelabi said Osun State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura had ordered a thorough investigation into the case, with the suspect to be formally charged once the probe is complete. Zungura assured the public that justice would be pursued in line with the law, while the command urged residents to promptly report missing persons cases and other suspicious activity, and to come forward with useful information whenever possible.
