Two people were killed and four others injured in Osogbo on Friday after suspected members of rival cult groups clashed at a lounge in the Owoeba community along the Osogbo/Ilesa Road, police confirmed.
The attack unfolded around 5pm, when a group of unidentified assailants descended on the lounge where the victims were drinking with others. A resident who spoke to AfrikTimes on condition of anonymity, citing security concerns, described hearing gunshots and noise break out in the area before the attackers overpowered the two men who would later be confirmed dead.
According to the resident’s account, one of the victims, known locally as “Small Rugged,” was struck on the head and died at the scene, while the second man was shot by the assailants. The resident said the community remained on edge after the attack, with police eventually arriving to remove the two bodies from the scene.
Police Confirm Killings, Deploy Tactical Teams
Osun State Police Command spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed the shooting in a statement, describing it as a suspected cult-related incident in the Oke Baale area of Osogbo. He said two people died at the scene, with “Small Rugged” identified as one of them, though his full identity remained unconfirmed as of the time of the statement. Four others sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Ojelabi said State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura had directed tactical teams to move into the area to track down and apprehend those responsible for the attack. A police van was later seen conveying the two bodies along Station Road, Osogbo, on Friday evening.
As of the time of filing, no arrests had been announced in connection with the attack, and the identities of the assailants remained unknown.
