The Federal Government has approved extensive renovations and upgrades to major sports infrastructure in Nigeria, including the iconic Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja and facilities in higher institutions.
According to the National Sports Commission (NSC), the project will revamp the stadium’s pitch, tartan tracks, dressing rooms, VIP and corporate suites, media centre, public address and security systems, as well as its cooling and heating systems.
The Commission noted that the stadium will also benefit from upgraded floodlights meeting international standards and the installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to support Nigeria’s readiness for international matches and tournaments.
Other approved upgrades include the rehabilitation of athletes’ hostels, the construction of a high-performance centre at the stadium, and improvements to indoor sports halls and swimming facilities.
According to NSC, the initiative is aimed at creating a world-class sports environment, generating revenue through events, and supporting athlete development across the country.
Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, said the renovations represent “a bold step towards restoring Nigeria’s sporting glory and creating sustainable opportunities for future generations.”
He added that these projects align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda to position sports as a driver of youth empowerment, job creation, and national economic growth.
The NSC also confirmed that similar upgrades will be carried out at other national stadiums, including the National Stadium Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, and Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, with completion timelines expected within 2027.
The Commission noted that the renovation projects form the first phase of a wider plan to establish sports centres across tertiary institutions and communities nationwide, aiming to encourage talent identification, grassroots sports development, and economic opportunities for youths.
