FUTA Student Found Dead Near Off Campus Residence in Akure

‎A student of the Federal University of Technology Akure has reportedly been found dead inside a bush near an off campus residence in Akure on Saturday, May 9.

‎According to a statement by the school management and as also confirmed by the Ondo State Police Command, the student was identified as Olaniyi Favour, male, 23, a student of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics of the university.

‎Circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear as the body of the deceased was found lifeless in the bush. However, a bottle suspected to contain poisonous content was found around the vicinity of the body, raising speculation of a possible suicide. What led to the death could not be verified as of the time this report was filed.

‎The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, in a statement confirmed that the body of the 100 level student has been deposited in the morgue while investigation has commenced to determine the possible cause of death.

‎”The Ondo State Police Command has commenced investigation into a suspected suicide case involving one Olaniyi Favour ‘M’, a 23-year-old 100-level student of Federal University of Technology Akure,” the statement read.

‎According to the statement, there was no sign of physical violence on the deceased, who was found in a bush at the north gate of the campus, while the only speculation that has given detectives a lead so far remains a bottle said to contain poisonous content.

‎Also confirming the incident in a statement, the institution’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo, described the occurrence as sad and unfortunate to the university community.

‎”The Federal University of Technology Akure is saddened by the unfortunate incident involving one of its students, Favour Olaniyi, a year one student in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics who was found dead very close to his off-campus residence on Saturday, May 9, 2026,” the statement read.

‎‎The statement also added that the parents of the deceased have been duly informed and that the university is cooperating with the necessary authorities for proper investigation.
