The Oyo State governorship aspirant on the platform of the Accord Party, Oriyomi Hamzat, has dismissed allegations linking him to a wanted suspect identified as Surajudeen Adio Babatunde, popularly known as “Surii Ilupeju.”

‎In a statement issued on Saturday, Hamzat described the reports circulating on social media as malicious, mischievous, and politically motivated. He said the publication was part of an attempt to  damage his reputation and create a false narrative around his political ambition.

‎Hamzat stated that he had never sponsored, protected, or supported any individual involved in criminal activities. He maintained that throughout his career as a broadcaster, humanitarian, and politician, he had remained committed to justice, truth, and the rule of law.

‎He argued that mere acquaintance or previous association with an individual should not be interpreted as knowledge of, or involvement in, that person’s alleged criminal conduct.

‎“I have never, at any time, sponsored, encouraged, shielded, or supported any individual involved in criminal activities,” he said.

‎The Accord candidate also stressed that the Nigeria Police Force remained the appropriate institution to investigate criminal allegations, warning against dragging innocent persons into matters for political reasons.

‎“If any individual is declared wanted or is under investigation, the appropriate course of action is to allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities,” Hamzat stated.

‎He added that he had always maintained a cooperative relationship with security agencies and would continue to assist lawful investigations whenever necessary.

‎Hamzat accused the authors of the publication of engaging in character assassination in an effort to score cheap political points ahead of the Oyo governorship race.

‎“Their intention is obvious: to score cheap political points by creating a false narrative around my person and my aspiration to serve the good people of Oyo State,” he said.

‎He urged residents of the state to disregard the allegations, insisting that no amount of blackmail or smear campaign would distract him from his political agenda and commitment to the welfare and progress of Oyo State.
