The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced plans to suspend its ongoing nationwide strike following renewed negotiations with the Federal Government.

The strike, which commenced on May 1, 2026, prompted a series of engagements between union leaders and government representatives over unresolved demands tied to the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement. The unions disclosed that discussions have intensified in recent days as both sides seek a resolution.

At a crucial meeting held on May 5, 2026, the unions met with the Federal Government’s Expanded Renegotiation Committee chaired by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed. Deliberations at the meeting highlighted the need for presidential approval before any final adjustments could be made to the government’s earlier offer.

“We have secured a firm commitment that all renegotiations, including a reviewed CONTTTA offer, will be concluded within two weeks from the date of suspension.”

Based on this development, union leaders have urged branch chairmen nationwide to convene congresses to deliberate on suspending the strike effective May 11, 2026.

The statement also noted that discussions with relevant stakeholders would continue alongside the proposed suspension, signaling a shift toward resolution while acknowledging the withdrawal of the proposed 30 percent increase in CONTTTA.
