The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 17 police officers following a deadly terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
According to the Force Headquarters, the attack occurred in the early hours of May 8, 2026, when heavily armed terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the military training facility from multiple directions at about 1:15 a.m.
The slain officers were among personnel undergoing specialized operational training at the institution. The attack also claimed the lives of several Nigerian Army personnel who were said to have fought fiercely while repelling the attackers.
In a statement issued on Friday by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the fallen officers as patriotic and courageous men who died in active service to the nation.
“The fallen officers were courageous and dedicated personnel who demonstrated exceptional patriotism and commitment to national security through their participation in advanced counter terrorism and tactical training programmes,” the statement read.
The police chief also extended condolences to the families of the deceased officers, assuring them that their sacrifices would never be forgotten by the nation and the Force.
As part of efforts to show solidarity with the victims and surviving personnel, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the training institution on behalf of the IGP.
During the visit, the police commissioner commiserated with the Commandant of the school, A.C. Enuagu, officers of the Nigerian Army, and police personnel who survived the attack.
The Nigeria Police Force further assured Nigerians that security agencies were intensifying efforts to track down those responsible for the attack.
“The Force, working closely with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, will sustain ongoing efforts to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice,” the statement said.
The Force also paid tribute to the deceased officers, describing their service and sacrifice as acts of honour that would remain etched in the nation’s memory.
