By The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a man identified as Adejuwon Adekunle, popularly known as “Asa,” by suspected cultists in Osogbo, the state capital.
Adekunle was reportedly attacked near a recreation centre in the Dele Yes Sir community in the early hours of Tuesday by assailants who are yet to be identified.
Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying Adekunle was shot and rushed to a hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains have since been deposited at a morgue.
“What happened in Dele Yes Sir is suspected to be a cult-related attack. The incident occurred around 2am on Tuesday,” Ojelabi said. “We got information that some armed men went to the area and started shooting sporadically. One Adejuwon Adekunle, aka Asa, was shot and rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival,” he added.
According to reports, the attack is believed to have taken place between 1:30am and 2am, with the assailants allegedly having traced Adekunle to the area beforehand. As of the time of this report, the circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear, and the identities and whereabouts of the suspected attackers have yet to be established.
Investigation Underway
Ojelabi said Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Zungura, has directed that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. “We have not made any arrest regarding the incident,” he said.
The police command said preliminary findings point to the attack being cult-related, while assuring the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding Adekunle’s death and identify those responsible.
