By Barely a month after it was opened to traffic, the Osun State Government has temporarily closed the Lameco Flyover in Osogbo following the discovery of a structural defect on the bridge.
One lane of the flyover was cordoned off on Friday, and videos circulating online showed visible cracks along a section of the structure. The closure has quickly become a political flashpoint, with the Accord Party alleging sabotage and the APC pointing instead to construction quality.
Accord Party’s Osun chairman, Pastor Victor Akande, described the incident as part of a broader, troubling trend of vandalism targeting infrastructure built under Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration. He alleged it reflected a calculated effort by opposition elements to discredit the government’s achievements ahead of the state’s upcoming governorship election, and called on security agencies to investigate and prosecute anyone found responsible, regardless of political affiliation. He also urged residents and community groups to stay alert and report suspicious activity around government projects to the relevant authorities.
The Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council rejected the sabotage narrative outright. In a statement from its Media and Publicity Director, Remi Omowaiye, the council said preliminary findings pointed instead to structural deficiencies, citing confirmed signs of failure including a deep pothole and other distress points that it said raised serious questions about construction quality barely weeks after commissioning.
The APC also linked the development to the absence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, a trained engineer, from the flyover’s commissioning ceremony on July 1, arguing that his decision not to attend, despite being invited, now appeared vindicated. The council called on Adeleke to close the bridge immediately and commission an independent structural assessment by qualified professionals, and advised motorists to steer clear until experts certify it safe.
At the July 1 commissioning, Adeleke had held up the flyover as a landmark achievement of his administration, noting that his government had completed more than 300 kilometres of intra-city roads across the state and stressing that the project, like others, was delivered with due process and transparency.
