The Oyo state Rule Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) has engaged farmers, herders and other critical stakeholders in a roundtable discussions on Oyo State Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law which was held on Thursday at the Local Government Service Commission Training Centre, Secretariat Ibadan.
According to the report which was signed by the Commissioner for information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, The stakeholders’ Summit was organized to provide an avenue for participants to deliberate on “peaceful coexistence, implementation of the grazing regulation law and measures to prevent recurring clashes between farmers and herders across the state”
According to the chairperson of OYRLEA , Justice Aderonke Aderemi she stated that the roundtable discussion is very essential as it strengthen compliance, “deepen dialogue and promote sustainable livestock management in the state”
She further noted that the discourse was aimed to solve issues circumscribing destruction of farmlands, insecurity and disruption of livelihoods, “the engagement was aimed at addressing recurring challenges affecting farmers and herders” she added.
She emphasized on peaceful coexistence which is very essential in sustaining development and stability across communities in the state.
She further explained that grazing regulation was not restricted to farm settlements alone but also covered individual farmlands and binding on both farmers and rearers
She further noted that the Governor of Oyo state, Governor Seyi Makinde, has urged all famers and herders to cooperate with the government and obey the rule of law.
“herders occupying government lands to vacate such areas and approach the Ministry of Agriculture for proper land allocation and ranching arrangements” she added
She further warned traders against selling their livestocks along roadsides during the forthcoming iléyá celebration, “violators would face the full wrath of the law” she noted.
The chairperson described the Governor’s peaceful approach to governance as “God-sent.”
Furthermore, the representatives of herders’ and farmers Alh. Muhammed Kabir Labar; Alh. Abubakar Jijji Ibrahim; Pa David Olatunji and Alh. Abdulrazak Duduyemi, promised to comply with the law and embrace peace as they also promised to establish a committee that will be in charge of addressing disputes. They also resolved to holding periodic meetings and report their decisions to the appropriate authorities.
