The Nigerian U-20 women’s football team, the Super Falconets, have officially qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Poland after securing a hard-fought 3-2 aggregate victory over Malawi.
The first leg of the qualifying round, held at the Ikenne in Nigeria, ended in a commanding 2-0 win for the hosts. After a goalless first half, the deadlock was broken early in the second period through an own goal by Malawi’s Maureen Kenneth. The Falconets quickly capitalised on that momentum, with Ifeanyi Kindness doubling the lead through a well-placed strike to give Nigeria a comfortable cushion heading into the return fixture.
However, the second leg at the Bingu National Stadium on Saturday, May 9, proved to be a far more difficult encounter. Malawi were determined to overturn the deficit. Their first strike came from Faith Chinzimu who scored an early goal that put the Falconets on the defensive.
Chinzimu struck again in the 57th minute, completing her brace and leveling the aggregate score at 2-2. Her second goal momentarily canceled out Nigeria’s first-leg advantage, leaving the qualification spot hanging in the balance.
The second strike appeared to jolt the Falconets back into action. Facing the prospect of an upset, the Nigerian side found a decisive response just five minutes later. Precious Oscar found the back of the net, scoring a crucial away goal that ultimately sealed the World Cup ticket for Nigeria.
While the match ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Falconets on the night, their 3-2 aggregate win ensures their 12th appearance at the global tournament.
Joining Nigeria in Poland are the Ghana U-20 team, who also qualified after a thrilling 3-2 aggregate victory over Uganda. This achievement marks the eighth consecutive World Cup appearance for the Black Princesses.
Meanwhile, the race for the remaining two African spots continues as Tanzania, Cameroon, Benin, and Cote d’Ivoire prepare to battle for their place on the world stage.
