Troops of the Nigerian Army, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, have rescued Mrs Amina Abubakar, wife of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, in the ongoing military offensive against bandits and terrorists in Katsina State.
AfrikTimes had earlier reported that troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, commenced clearance operations in Matazu Local Government Area and surrounding communities following the death of Major General Abubakar, who was abducted alongside his wife by suspected bandits.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said Mrs Abubakar was rescued during sustained search-and-rescue operations conducted by troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
According to the military, troops mounted sustained pressure on the criminal elements and eventually made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of the victim.
“The rescue operation followed intensified search-and-rescue efforts conducted by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA. During sustained offensive operations and pressure mounted on the criminal elements, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of Mrs Abubakar,” the statement read.
The military disclosed that Mrs Abubakar was left behind by the bandits after she reportedly suffered a gunshot wound from the bandit during the encounter.
“In the course of the encounter, the bandits shot Mrs Abubakar before abandoning her and fleeing due to the overwhelming pressure from advancing troops,” the statement added.
The statement further added that Mrs Abubakar was immediately evacuated to a military hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
The military said it is committed to its ongoing operations aimed at tracking down and neutralising the perpetrators of the abduction, as well as clearing terrorist and bandit enclaves across Katsina State and other parts of the country.
