The Oyo State government has urged residents to take precautionary measures against flash floods, temporary road overflows, and rising temperatures expected in the coming weeks.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, noted that these precautions are necessary as the state is likely to witness flash floods and thunderstorms due to the coming rainy season.
He added that the soil across is still hard and may limit water infiltration and cause heavy surface runoff on roads and drainages in some communities.
He further added that why most flooding is expected to be temporary, such flooding could become prolonged and destructive if drainages and waterways are blocked.
He therefore advised people to desist from activities that could disrupt natural water flow in their communities.
Meanwhile, the commissioner also advised residents to stay hydrated, remain in cool environments, and avoid prolonged sun exposure as the transition from the dry to the rainy season is said to come with heat waves with temperature rising between 33-35°C
The Oyo State government has been experiencing heat waves lately. In March 2026, AfrikTimes reported that the Oyo State Government issued an urgent environmental health advisory, warning residents to take precautionary measures as temperatures rise to as high as 41°C across the state.
The warning followed a heat stress alert by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency indicating a surge in temperature affecting Oyo and several other states nationwide.
The latest development is expected to guide residents to protect themselves from the harmful consequences that come with heat waves.
