Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun, has secured the All Progressive Congress (APC) senatorial ticket for Ogun East after the incumbent senator representing the district, stepped down hours before the primary on Monday, May 18 2026.
Gbenga Daniel who has been widely endorsed for the APC senatorial ticket in the constituency stepped down from his reelection bid on Sunday, May 17, 2026. It was regarded as a clearing path for Governor Dapo Abiodun
The APC senatorial primaries held across ogun state’s three districts were reported peaceful and orderly, with a large turnout of party members.
Dapo Abiodun recorded massive victories while Gbenga Daniel pulled zero votes
At ward 2 and 3, Abiodun got 532 votes and 810 out of 812 accredited voters.
In ward 9, Ode Remo, the governor secured 1,116 votes, while Daniel got zero. In ward 10, Abiodun polled 714 votes, and Daniel again scored zero.
The Governor dismissed Gbenga Daniel’s claim of planned violence
“I want to debunk the perception some people are trying to create. Someone claimed that he withdrew from the race because of perceived or planned violence” the governor stated after voting at ward 3.
He further stated that other aspirants in Ogun central and Ogun west stepped down voluntarily without alleging violence.
Dapo and Abiodun had been locked in a tense rivalry in recent months, trading accusations over governance and personal disputes. Daniel accused the governor of demolishing his wife’s five storey plaza in Ijebu-ode and obstructing constituency projects. Abiodun, however, denied the claims, countering that some of Daniel’s projects were constructed with substandard materials.
