‎The Nigeria Defence Headquarters has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in captivity after being abducted by unidentified assailants few days ago.

‎In a statement issued on Friday, June 13, 2026, the military expressed grief over the former senior officer’s death and described the incident as a painful loss to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the country at large.

‎Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the military deliberately refrained from making public comments on the abduction while efforts were ongoing to rescue the retired officer safely.

‎According to the statement, the Armed Forces deployed operational resources alongside other security agencies in an attempt to secure his release before his death was confirmed.

‎The Defence Headquarters said the late Major General Abubakar served Nigeria with distinction during his military career and held several strategic appointments, including Director of Defence Information and spokesperson for various military formations.

‎The military noted that he made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations and the professional growth of the Armed Forces.

‎“His commitment to duty and to the unity of Nigeria remains a shining example for all personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the statement read.

‎The Defence Headquarters said the incident has further strengthened the resolve of the military to intensify operations against terrorists and criminal networks operating across the country.

‎The military also assured Nigerians that ongoing security operations would continue until those responsible for acts of terrorism, abduction and violence are brought to justice.

‎“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorist activities across the nation are held to account,” the statement added.

‎The Armed Forces extended condolences to the family of the deceased retired general, his colleagues and Nigerians mourning his death.
