The Federal Government has declared June 29 to July 3, 2026, as National Learning Assessment (NLA) Week as part of preparations for Nigeria’s first nationwide learning assessment covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The assessment is aimed at generating reliable data on pupils’ and students’ learning achievements to support education planning, policy reforms, resource allocation, and improve learning outcomes across the country.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday June 17, 2026, by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, the exercise is strictly diagnostic and will not be used for promotion, placement, or certification.
The ministry explained that preparations for the exercise began in 2025 through a partnership involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), UNICEF and the World Bank.
It noted that assessment instruments have already been developed, pilot-tested and validated, while personnel required for the nationwide exercise have been trained.
The assessment will be conducted in selected schools across the country and will involve learners in Primary Three, Primary Five, Junior Secondary School Two (JS2) and Senior Secondary School Two (SS2).
Subjects to be assessed include English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, as well as Citizenship and Heritage Studies.
Speaking on the initiative, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the exercise as a significant step towards improving accountability in the education sector.
He said the assessment would provide credible evidence to guide government decisions, strengthen educational planning and drive reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes nationwide.
