Man Arrested Over Alleged Arson at Cross River Residence, Names Mother as Instigator

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested 41-year-old Bassey Ekpo in connection with the alleged burning of a house at 8 Miles in Calabar, the state capital.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to a statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, and released to journalists in Calabar on Saturday, the incident was reported on Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Ikot Omin Police Division by the homeowner, Ekemini Stephen.

“The incident was reported today, Friday, 11 September 2026 at the Ikot Omin police division by the occupant of the house, Ekemini Stephen, who stated that while he was in church, he received a phone call from a neighbour informing him that his residence had been set ablaze,” the statement read.

With the help of neighbours, the suspect was apprehended at the scene and taken to the police station for questioning.

Suspect Names Mother as Instigator

During preliminary questioning, Ekpo allegedly claimed he had been sent by his 61-year-old mother, who police say is currently at large and has been named as the alleged instigator behind the arson. “With the assistance of neighbours, the suspect was apprehended and brought to the Police Station. Police operatives have since visited the scene and taken photographs as part of ongoing evidence gathering.

Investigation Continues

ASP Eitokpah said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether other individuals were involved. Police assured residents that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
