By The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reaffirmed “Operation Zero” as the electricity industry’s ultimate safety goal, with new data showing that safety incidents in the sector dropped by 41.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2026.
The figures were contained in a report published on Tuesday, 21st July 2026, and presented by the Commission’s Technical Regulation Division at the First 2026 Bi-Annual NESI Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Managers’ Meeting, hosted in collaboration with the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).
The report “highlighted a 41.7% decline in significant safety incidents across the sector compared to Q4 2025,” with fatalities dropping from 27 to 17, injuries falling from 18 to 13, and incident notifications declining from 48 to 28.
Despite the improvement, the Commission cautioned against complacency.
“While this data shows encouraging progress, every incident represents a human life. The Commission reaffirms ‘Operation Zero’ as the industry’s ultimate safety objective,” the statement read.
The meeting drew HSE managers from generation companies (GenCos), distribution companies (DisCos), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs), and “concluded with a clear directive” to operators.
