By The Osun State House of Assembly has passed the Osun State University Establishment Amendment Bill 2026, clearing the way for the legislation to head to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s desk for assent.
The Bill Clears Third Reading
Lawmakers pushed the bill through its third reading on Thursday, September 3, during plenary presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, after working through and amending its provisions. The motion to move the bill forward was brought by Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Adekunle Emmanuel, representing Irepodun/Ilobu State Constituency, and seconded by Hon. Olawale Oladipupo Akerele of Ilesa West State Constituency.

From there, the House shifted into a Committee of the Whole to work through the bill clause by clause, a stage that allows lawmakers to scrutinise and adjust individual provisions before a final vote. Once that process wrapped up, Emmanuel moved for the House to resolve out of committee, a motion Hon. Taofeek Olalekan Olayiwola of Ede South State Constituency seconded.
Before the final vote, lawmakers also tweaked the bill’s own title, changing it from “Osun State University Establishment Amendment Law 2026” to “Osun State University Establishment Amendment Bill 2026,” a small but formal correction ahead of its third reading and eventual passage.
What Happens Next
With passage secured, the bill now moves to Governor Adeleke for assent once the remaining legislative procedures are completed. Its signing into law would formally amend the statute governing Osun State University, known as UNIOSUN.
Background
The amendment bill follows earlier controversy over the tenure of UNIOSUN’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Adebooye, whose stay in office was extended in a move critics argued ran ahead of the legal framework meant to govern it. The Assembly’s decision to amend the establishment law now provides the legislative backing that extension had previously lacked, formalising a position that had already been put into practice.
