Following a protest at Obafemi Awolowo University on April 28, 2026, which saw students block the institution’s main entrance, the University Senate has ordered a three-week mid-semester break with immediate effect, directing all students to vacate the campus.

The protest, staged earlier in the day, was driven by student dissatisfaction over the newly introduced transportation system, the eviction of some residents from Awolowo Hall without adequate planning, and reported irregularities in the institution’s e-portal upgrade.
In a statement issued by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the decision to suspend academic activities was linked to the disruption caused by students, including the obstruction of access routes into the campus and the harassment of road users.

The University management noted that efforts to de-escalate the situation proved unsuccessful, warning that the developments posed a significant threat to safety and overall campus stability.
The Senate maintained that the temporary closure is aimed at restoring order, ensuring safety, and creating room for constructive engagement with stakeholders to address the concerns raised by students.
Parents and guardians have been advised to remain informed and make necessary arrangements for their wards as the situation develops, while the University assured that measures are being put in place to return normalcy to campus life.
