“We’ll Resist APC’s One-Party State”–Opposition Parties Rally in Ibadan, Target INEC

Opposition parties, including PDP, ADC, NNPP,, LP, APP on Saturday, April 25, urged that the INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan should not conduct the 2027 general elections having shown bias and partisanship in favour of the ruling APC.

The national summit of all opposition political party leaders held in Ibadan, Oyo State, chaired by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the former President of Nigeria and hosted by Gov. Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State. The parties reached a consensus after deliberations on the threats and the constant challenges facing the country.

The opposition promised that all efforts to build a one- party state by the APC shall be futile.

“We shall resist all machinations by the All Progressive Congress (APC) to foist a one- party state on Nigeria and fight for the survival of multi-party democracy in our country,” Mr Turaki Said.

The opposition also demanded that the the Electoral act should be reviewed for a free and fair election in Nigeria.

“The National Assembly should immediately review the Electoral Act, 2026 to remove all sections that threaten the sanctity and integrity of the elections and run counter to constitutional provisions”

Furthermore, it was suggested that all leading politicians that are on bailable offences should be released immediacy and allowed them to exercise their fundamental rights as citizens of Nigeria.

David Mark, the chairman of ADC stated that the ruling APC has restrain the people to exercise their right in choosing the leader of their choice.

“In the last three years, this government has launched major attacks on the opposition parties, all in a bid to deny the people the right to choose. They want to foist a one-party state on Nigeria,” Mark said

The opposition parties also called on INEC to extend primaries deadline till the end of July, noting that the recent guidelines from the commission stifle the operations of the parties.

“That we consider the recent guidelines released by the INEC as obstacles, deliberately engineered to impose conditions and deadlines on the opposition parties. We therefore demand that INEC extends the deadline for primaries till the end of July, 2026,” the communique reads.
