The Federal Government has commenced the process of implementing the 2025 agreement reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) following the inauguration of an Implementation Monitoring Committee.
According to a statement dated June 8, 2026, and signed by Boriowo Folasade, Press and Public Relations, the committee was inaugurated in Abuja by the Ministry of Education and is expected to oversee the execution of the agreement’s provisions and ensure that all commitments made by both parties are fulfilled within the agreed timelines.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, said the move marked an important step towards achieving stability and improved cooperation in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
She explained that the committee was created to track progress, promote accountability, and maintain communication among relevant stakeholders involved in the implementation process.
The minister noted that the agreement between the government and ASUU demonstrated the importance of dialogue and collaboration in addressing challenges affecting the university system.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Abel O. Enitan, described the inauguration as a step towards improving transparency and strengthening oversight in the education sector.
He urged members of the committee to carry out their duties with fairness and professionalism to ensure the objectives of the agreement are achieved.
Chairman of the Implementation Monitoring Committee, Olarewaju Tejuoso, assured that the body would approach its assignment with commitment and openness.
Also speaking, ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, called for continued engagement between the government and the union, stressing the need for regular consultations throughout the implementation process.
The Federal Government said it remained committed to carrying out the agreement and promoting lasting industrial peace across Nigerian universities.
