The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that the manufacturer of BON Bread, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, complies with regulatory standards following an investigation into concerns raised over the product’s unusually long shelf life.
The agency disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the investigation was launched after a social media post alleged that a loaf of bread remained free from mould for more than two months.
According to NAFDAC, although the complainant did not mention the bread brand, BON Bread’s manufacturer publicly identified the product as theirs and described the allegation as misleading, prompting the agency to begin a scientific inquiry.
As part of the probe, NAFDAC inspected the company’s bakery facility in Abuja and collected samples from both the production site and the open market for laboratory analysis.
The agency said tests showed the bread contained calcium propionate, an approved preservative widely used in bread production, and that the quantity detected fell within internationally accepted safety limits under the Codex Alimentarius standards.
NAFDAC also stated that laboratory analysis found no objectionable substances in the bread samples, including bromate or non-nutritive sweeteners.
“The Agency therefore assures the public that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited is not in violation of any NAFDAC regulation.”
The regulator further noted that the company has maintained compliance with regulatory requirements since it began operations in 2006 and has completed several licence renewals without penalties or product recalls.
NAFDAC urged members of the public to report concerns relating to regulated products through its offices nationwide or via its call centre to support evidence-based investigations.
