Unity Cup 2026: Super Eagles Return to London to Defend Cup Title The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on the Warriors of Zimbabwe to kickstart the third edition of the Unity Cup at The Valley Stadium in South East London.
The Unity Cup is an international football tournament held in London, England. A first of its kind, the tournament is a premier international event celebrating Afro-centric and global diaspora communities within London.

This year’s competition will take place from May 26–30 at The Valley, the home of Charlton Athletic FC and the historic venue of the original 2004 Unity Cup encounter. The tournament will feature four countries with significant diaspora communities in London: defending champions Nigeria, Jamaica, Zimbabwe, and India.
Nigeria enters the competition as the defending champions, having defeated Jamaica 5–4 on penalties in the 2025 final at the 17,250-capacity Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford. In that match, Moses Simon gave Nigeria an early lead in the 8th minute after converting a square pass from Cyriel Dessers. However, the Reggae Boys equalized within three minutes through a goal by Dixon, assisted by Renaldo Cephas, leaving the score 1–1 at halftime.
The Super Eagles struck again in the 52nd minute when Samuel Chukwueze received a pass from Nathan Tella and drove a low, left-footed shot into the corner to reclaim the lead. The resilient Reggae Boys found another equalizer just 10 minutes later when Renaldo Cephas beat his marker and crossed into the box for Jon Russell, who slammed the ball into the back of the net.

After a 2–2 draw in regulation time, the match proceeded to penalties. Nigeria converted all five of their spot-kicks, while Jamaica’s Atkinson missed the target with his attempt. The game ended 5–4, allowing the Super Eagles to lift the Unity Cup for the second time. Historically, Nigeria holds the most titles, having emerged as champions in both the 2004 and 2025 editions.
Tournament Schedule
On Tuesday, May 26, Nigeria will face Zimbabwe, an underdog, at 7:30 pm at The Valley. In all seven encounters between both teams since 2004, the Super Eagles are yet to fall to Zimbabwe, having won four matches and drawn three. Notably, the last encounter in the World Cup Qualifiers ended in a 1-1 draw.
The second match between Jamaica and India, another underdog, will take place the following day at the same venue. The winners will progress to the final, while the losing teams will compete in a third-place play-off, both scheduled for May 30. Between the play-off and the grand final, fans at the stadium will have the opportunity to watch the UEFA Champions League final between Arsenal and PSG on the big screens.
Squad News
According to reports from official Unity Cup media page, India and Zimbabwe have already announced their squads for the 2026 Unity Cup. However, the squad list for the Super Eagles has not yet been released. Indications suggest that coach Eric Chelle is still scouting talent both locally and abroad, as evidenced by his frequent presence at Nigeria Premier Football League matches over recent weekends.
This activity suggests Chelle may be looking to integrate more home-based players into the squad. AfrikTimes observations placed him at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan on May 3 for Shooting Stars vs. Nasarawa United. In his interview with the 3SCFansTV, he mentioned that he was at the stadium to assess the qualities of the Ibadan Shooting’s midfield maestro, Ayobami Junior. Other media reports also spotted him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium for Enugu Rangers’ 2–1 win over Bendel Insurance and at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
